Thinking of enrolling in Silliman University this pandemic? Let’s read one of its students’ stories regarding the top university in Dumaguete.
Online learning has become the recent norm for many university students. Do we still need to recall what happened in 2020? The virus literally changed our lives!
Aside from the work from home setup among professionals, students experienced the drastic change too!
We said goodbye to traditional classes, and group activities. We couldn’t eat or hang out anymore, and they’re all just part of the good old days.
Fortunately, Silliman University made this experience a little bit enjoyable based on how they kept up with this sudden transition.
How Silliman University Transitioned to Online Classes
Many of us have missed out on the excitement of packing up for school and moving into our dormitories, exploring the campus and looking for new crushes during GE subjects. I feel bad that we can’t do these things anymore!
Despite falling short of our college life expectations this year, Silliman University went the extra mile to build a community among its students despite online distance learning.
Students and faculty members made us feel welcomed in one family through fun activities!
One example is the annual tradition of campus tours. Instead of going around the campus, it went on virtually. It’s too comforting to know that you could still and feel the vibes of the campus even when you’re far!
Talk about “modern learning’ 🙂
Founder’s Week of Silliman University
One of the biggest events for the university is our Founder’s Week. Referred to as Hibalag by students, faculty and alumni, it was completely done online!
Many organizations were looking forward to building their booths for the week long celebration. What is a better way of doing it but through Minecraft?
This year, they utilized Minecraft as student’s way to celebrate the Founder’s Week. I wish I could discuss every detail of it, but no doubt it was fun.
Missing the Pre-Covid Activities
Many of the students who studied at the university during face-to-face classes always reminisce about their campus memories, and their favorite things to do.
How I missed activities like eating the iconic cheesebread from the Silliman Cafeteria! What about taking naps in the library? Or, the time we spent after school for our hangout sessions at the amphitheater.
There’s one Facebook group I love visiting. It’s called “Kunohay naa tas SU nya normal ra tanan”, which allows students to post relatable photos of pre-COVID things to do in Silliman.
There’s a certain sadness and slight beauty behind it, but we still do our best to keep the bond among everyone strong.
I just hope this ends and we go back to normal ASAP!
If there’s one thing I’ve proven this year, it’s the Silliman spirit that uplifted students during this tough time! The university really brought everyone together, even if we’re all in our own homes.
